Features of each home

Inspired by the philosophy of The Pattern Language, each of my small homes are designed to ensure a connection to life, a connection to others and a sense of security.

The goal of my website is not to sell house plans but, rather, to present ideas that stimulate a conversation on the larger concept of home. My focus is designing small, energy efficient, affordable homes which also provide a sense of comfort and connection—with nature, ourselves, and each other.

You can explore my designs here and here.

01

A connection to life is felt by creating a sense of closeness to the ground by:

  • Using windows, 6' tall, 8” above the first floor.

  • The first floor is 6” above grade, only one step down

  • Bushes, trees and water features all around the house also connect us to life.

  • All of the homes are single story to insure this feature so that all spaces have the same feeling.

  • A connection with one another is enhanced when the light around us comes from at least two directions. Many of the designed homes have light coming into a space from tall windows and doors on three walls.

02

A sense of security, safety, is improved when:

  • The entrance is through a garden on the side of the house.

  • Privacy fences around the house are used for courtyards, patios and for homes on small lots.

  • Neighborhoods with green common areas for connection to nature for all residences to enjoy.

03

Special features to make the homes more interesting include:

  • Gated privacy fence for urban and rural areas.

  • Large french doors permitting natural wind to flow through the house and a greater sense of connection with  nature.

  • Water features that connect us to life.

  • Two car garage for three bedroom homes.

  • Skylights in vaulted ceilings provide more interesting  light through out the day.

  • Abundance of windows makes small homes feel larger.

  • Post and beams visually separate spaces.

04

Special features to reduce home costs include:

  • Closets with upper and lower clothes rods.

  •  Attic space and hidden sheds for extra storage.

  •  House suited for small lots.

  •  Carports are less expensive.

  •  Pantries have more usable space and are less expensive than top kitchen cabinets.

  •  Vinyl siding is used.

  •  Mini splits are more efficient to heat and cool the home

  • Instantaneous hot water heater under the counter tops is more energy efficient.
